A new year means new social media trends. With every new technological advancement, social norms change, which affects the way we use social media. This list shows what will change and what will stay the same this year.

1. Brand participation in messaging platforms:

More than 2.5 billion people use some type of messaging platform. In 2018, brands will spend more time connecting with customers via these platforms. Using assistive technology, like instant replies, will help companies offer a more personalized experience to customers without stretching their resources.

2. Less organic reach:

As more businesses increase their presence on social media, brands must make big moves to be seen, despite the decline in organic reach. Businesses should be investing more in paid advertising to keep their numbers up.

3. Social video sharing:

Sharing videos online was a major growing trend in 2017 and will continue through 2018. Live streaming videos are watched three times more than pre-recorded videos. When it comes to making purchases, 69% of YouTube or social media viewers are more influenced by online video than content from newspaper or magazines.

Videos also need to be mobile friendly. With an increasing number of people using smartphones, videos will be watched more on mobile than on personal computers.

4. Local/personal experiences will increase:

2018 will be a big year for brands that want to increase local and personal experiences.
